This 430-acre park was established in 1958 and is named for Union General Ambrose E. Burnside. The island is an idyllic spot to go hiking, boating, or fishing. There are also a few places to camp along the lake, including a lakeside campground.

This state park is located on an island in the Cumberland River and offers the best public golf course in the state.

Whether you're looking for a day at the park or a long weekend of fishing, General Burnside Island State Park is the perfect destination for you. The park's 18-hole golf course was built in the 1950s and has recently been renovated. It offers stunning views of the Cumberland River, where some of America's finest fishing can be found.

General Burnside Island State Park is located 56 miles upstream from the dam. Using the map on the website, visitors can navigate to the island and find a camping spot. There are several campgrounds near General Burnside Island State Park. You can also stay overnight at Cumberland Point Campground, which is located near the park's boating dock.

Visitors can also explore the history of Kentucky's first pioneer, Dr. Thomas Walker. He inhabited the area before Daniel Boone arrived there. His grave is at the site of the Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site. Stephen Foster used the Rowan family's mansion as inspiration for his poem, "My Old Kentucky Home." Costumed guides walk visitors through the mansion and formal gardens.
